Case Study
James Pigott - Director of Compliance (COLP)
I am frequently given opportunities to hone my skills and, after well over thirty years in law, I still come into work and feel inspired.
When I joined Kent County Council in 2009 I was made responsible for leading the Property team. After 3 years I was promoted so that I had responsibility for all the non-contentious lawyers dealing with Property, Planning and Highways, Contracts and Procurement. After that, I became Head of Law and now I am one of the Directors of Invicta Law Limited. I have been Director of Compliance, Director Group Practice, Joint Chief Executive and now Director of Compliance for another term.
I am part of the management team that is responsible for leading and building the business. As Director of Compliance, part of my role is to ensure that Invicta Law complies with its professional responsibilities and that our work meets the very high standards required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, ISO, LEXCEL and, most importantly, our clients. My role as Head of Legal Practice involves leading and developing our lawyers and their support staff and line managing our legal practice Heads of Group to ensure we continue to deliver exceptional service to our clients. As a Director, I play a part in developing relationships with key clients and working with our lawyers to develop the business.
I think the company appeals to adaptable individuals who are ready to take ownership of their ideas and rise to challenges. It’s a friendly, supportive environment where hard work is recognised and innovation positively encouraged and supported. We want to help our lawyers and all support staff to fulfil their potential and build satisfying careers. This is something I care passionately about.
I want all our lawyers to really understand our client’s business, have open minds, a strong knowledge of the law and great communication skills. Communication is vital to developing excellent relationships with clients, reaching a level of mutual respect and trust that is essential to get the right results. As lawyers, we need to be trusted advisors. This takes time but is one of the greatest rewards of a career in law.
I have frequently been given opportunities to develop my skills in different environments and to learn new ones. After well over thirty years in law, I still come into work and face new challenges. No two days are the same.
