Kirstine Hidalgo Souto
Joint Head of Child Protection
Kirstine currently jointly leads the Child Protection Team at Invicta Law with Helen Osborn. The team comprises over 70 people (including support staff) dealing primarily with public law proceedings including a number of very complex cases such as fabricated induced illness, inflicted injuries, sexual abuse (including historic), international cases, deprivation of liberty and child death. The team has comprehensive experience in all aspects of child protection law, dealing with over 330 cases, on average, every year. Kirstine also deals with adoption, judicial reviews and policy advice.
Kirstine was educated at the University of Reading and the College of Law. She undertook her training in private practice at the largest legal aid firm in England gaining experience in Family Law, Child Care Law and Mental Health Law. Upon qualification in 2011, Kirstine remained with the firm for a short period specialising in both Family and Child Care Law, before moving to a London local authority in 2011 to focus on public law proceedings.
Kirstine joined Kent Legal Services in 2015, which then transitioned to Invicta Law in 2017. When Kirstine first joined Kent Legal Services, she led the Asylum Team dealing with the varying legal issues relating to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children entering Kent through the port of Dover, including age assessments (to fact finding), issues regarding no recourse to public funds and human rights act assessments. She moved into a Principal Solicitor role within the Child Protection Team in 2018 and was promoted to Deputy Head of Group in 2021 after covering the Head of Group role while a colleague was on maternity leave.
Kirstine has delivered training to lawyers and social workers on a variety of topics at both conferences and meetings. Kirstine is an Executive Committee Member for the Association of Lawyers for Children.
